The Reading Agency - Participate 2010 - 2011

The Reading Agency, a national charity promoting libraries and reading, is co-ordinating a project in the Y&H region, focussing on the Library Youth Offer.  Through 'Participate', library services are seeking to involve young people more fully in positive activities within libraries as well as about books and reading.  The Youth Work Unit has been brought in to support the project and to ensure the involvement of youth work services and in particular participation workers.

There is a joint libraries / youth work services training day on 11 March 2010, 10.00am to 4.00pm at the Belle Isle Centre in Leeds.  Youth Work colleagues would meet library C&YP's leads and project staff and learn more about the project overall, undertake some joint training and begin to plan possible joint positive activities work.

The Participate programme has been approved by the Senior Children's (and Young People's) Librarians (SCL) and by the Association of Chief Librarians (ASCEL) and eleven LAs have signed up - North East Lincolnshire, York, Hull, North Yorkshire, Bradford, Leeds, Kirklees, Wakefield, Calderdale, North Lincolnshire and Doncaster.

The programme aims to:
  • build on lessons learnt in year one, using Fulfilling their Potential and the Library Offer as the context to this work
  • develop library based creative positive activities
  • help libraries to shape a cultural offer to 11-19 year olds
  • develop a Youth Involvement Strategy for the region
  • develop volunteering opportunities for young people
Please contact the Youth Work Unit by 3rd March if you would like to attend theunit@youthworkunit.com

Children England (Y&H) and VCS Engage (Y&H) - Regional Workshop

Regional Workshop 'Now It's Personal' a seminar for the VCS on person-centred approaches to services for children, young people and families

Thursday 27th May 2010
10.00am - 2.00pm (including networking lunch)
Hinsley Hall, Leeds

Change is in the air and not just in the area of 'big' politics.  Talk of person-centred planning, self-directed support, budget-holding lead professionals and direct payments all foretell a fundamental shift in welfare thinking.  The key unifying idea is to the devolution of power and control to people and families who need support.  The question to be explored at this event is 'what will this mean for the VCS?'

The session will include background information about the change agenda, an update on what's happening around our region, and a range of views about the positive potential and pitfalls for the VCS.  As always with these events, however, a key aim will be to make connections and encourage good conversations between key players in the region who want to ensure that the changes service the interests of children, young people and families who need support, equitably.

Book your place now!
There will be a fee of £50, with some free places for smaller VCS organisations.  Places are limited to 80 and will be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, so please book as soon as possible using the form and sending it to Karen Speller at karen.speller@actionforchildren.org.uk or by post to Karen Speller at Action for Children, 12 Granby  Road, Harrogate, HG1 4ST.

Please forward your cheque, made payable to Action for Children, to Karen Speller at the address above.  Confirmation of your booking and joining details will be forwarded to you upon receipt of payment.

Excellent News for Creative Young People in Yorkshire

There have been celebrations among Yorkshire's youngsters, with the news that multi-million pound grants from the Government's myplace programme are being awarded to build three world-class youth centres.

Kingston upon Hull City Council, The Square Chapel Trust in Halifax and Coast and Moors Voluntary Action in Scarborough are among eight organisations across England to secure funding in the final round of the myplace programme. The Government scheme is awarding over £31 million in total to projects that put young people in the lead on choosing the activities on offer and the design and running of the centres.

myplace is a £270 million programme funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Familities (DCSF) and delivered by the Big Fund, the non Lottery funding operation of the Big Lottery Fund.
